...I wish it existed. Or does it?

Since all my earlier, all second-hand, iPhones had cameras inferior (3-8 Mpix) to my digital pocket cam, I've collected a truckload of apps to boost my photos. Or just for replacing the somewhat crappy "native camera app". And of course, many of the apps I use have I found through this heavy community.

But now, since my brand new iP SE, I've been a bit jolted when suddenly old favorite apps have been reduced to a bad joke. Why? Since the native camera app, along with 12 Mpix, kills them all.

I've been modest in my choice of apps to install on my new baby, but still, I start them up, curse, spit and fret - and delete them again.

Even my all-time favorite replacement app, PureShot, dared to disappoint me.

Whazzat? You dare LAGGING on me, gdmn clown app? Goodbye.

Soon, the only apps surviving my bad app crusade will be TouchRetouch + KaleidaCam and a few similiar image twisting just for fun apps.

So, since I see we have a lot of billionares here wielding the über expensive iP 7 Plus, I wonder: have any of you found an app that's actually better than the (iPhone) "native camera app" these days? And no, I don't like ProCamera either.

Don't keep the secret. Tell me. :)

Nope. The native camera app is the one for me. The only other app I use is Camera+ because of it's 'macro' feature which is good but you need to have a steady hand.

Oh, right. Camera+. Forgot that one, it dwells somewhere in my "app cloud". Thanks.

Now, where can I download Steady Hand? :lmao:

Ha! Billionaire? I wouldn't wish that curse on anybody, least of all me and mine thank you... :barf:

However, we have scrimped and saved and do own the mighty 7 Plus, of which you speak...

I can honestly say, all of my iMagery is taken with the Native Camera, part through laziness, but also because the results are flawless, aside from the human (me!) factor.... ;)

Even my Hipstamatic work has been relegated to an afterthought once my photographs have been Natived, and sort of processed with the also native Photos App... :D

Can't wait to see how the Anniversay iPhone improves on our current package... :rog:

richardcb Richard organised a poll to find out what apps were the most popular amongst the Mobi members (well, those that took part anyway). It's here. I don't know if that will help you.:)

Of course I was joking about the billionaire thing. Slightly.

Anyway, no Hipsta for me either these days.

    Anniversary iPhone, what's that?

My app for photos is Filmborn. Better than native because of level, grid and highlight clipping markers. Great films too.

Whatever the new magic app is it would need to include Live Photos and Portrait Mode to be a serious contender to replace the native camera app.

You're right that the 7 Plus is pricy. $1550.00 here in Canada (eh?) 128GB with Apple Care. How to justify that expense with limited income? I paid just short of $2000 for a Canon 6D camera body which I ended up using very little. In fact I find my iPhone has become my most often used camera of any I have so it makes sense to invest in something good. I sold my little-used 6D.
Another way to look at it is that the 6D is a single purpose tool while the iPhone is a multipurpose tool. You get more for your money all in one package.

The only area in which the native camera app lets me down is HDR. I find proper HDR essential in many photographing situations and the native app's pseudo HDR just gives HDR a bad name.
There are other special situations in which the native camera app is weak and special use apps come into use here. But overall it's hard to beat.

Since I got an iPhone 7, I use the native camera app most of the time. Every now and then I trot out Camera+ and ProCamera to see if I've forgotten something, but so far I've always gone back to the native cam.

I do supplement it with a couple of apps. I use Lightroom Mobile for shooting HDR, an app named Focus when I want manual focusing for shooting something close up, and Slow Shutter Cam for long exposures. That's about it.

Yes, but Steve Jobs swore that keyboards and stylus would never darken the corridors of iPad development because they were unnecessary. Thank goodness Apple moved on!

Well, let's see: so far I've been reminded of the forgotten Camera+, thank you ImageArt , and reminded that I suddenly DO have a phone that'll work with Filmborn (see, I signed up for the newletter as soon as they started bragging about this product only exisiting as an idea, but later on they insulted anyone with iPhone 5c or under, including me on my iP5, so I cancelled the newsletter and forgot about the app). Thank you, Mik :)

And some insights and good advice here as well, so thanks, all (yes, I'm sober but out of coffee).

Cool. Actually, I've already installed it. Took a quick tour but closed it again, like, "ooh my head". Lotsa stuff to try out - tomorrow. Right now I'm "resetting" my iPhone, since it began to show false, too low, space left. Oh joy.

I don't have cc so I don't know what extra features would come to the camera. Without cc, when I use the HDR camera feature I don't see any exposure brackets or any way to adjust the bracket range, which is a pretty basic control. Neither are there any post-exposure HDR controls. Also, it takes quite a while to process the resulting image so I'm wondering if the processing is done in my iPhone or online. In settings you can elect to save the unprocessed original photo (singular) not a bracketed set of 3. HDR made from a single exposure is just tonal manipulation, not true HDR. When I go into "edit" for a Lightroom HDR I can see the only thing done was to raise the overall exposure and cut back the highlights. So far I haven't been happy with any of my Lightroom HDR tests.
Neither can you import a bracketed series shot with a different app for HDR processing in Lightroom.
It's hard for me to believe that Adobe wouldn't offer a real HDR option so I'm wondering if they hold that back for cc customers only.

Lightroom mobile HDR is simple to use but may lack some features you are used to from other HDR apps. Lightroom takes three DNG (that is RAW) images and chooses automatically the exposure for each. It then combines the three images into one DNG image. As this is a RAW format image, you have many possibilities to adjust things while maintaining an overall good quality without burning out the highlights or shadows, way more better than editing a JPG.

But for me, I don't like the look of HDR images very much. Even the "moderate" or "careful" ones with reasonable contrasts. They all look some kind of unrealistic to me.
