For the fifth year running MobiTog has scratched its collective head and come up with a list of apps from the previous year that it considers worthy of being on any serious mobile photographer’s device. As always, the choices are bound to surprise, delight, annoy and frustrate in equal measure.

This time a name change and some new categories open up the field even more to an incredibly diverse range of apps. Voting has been very close in a few categories leading to ties for several positions.

Where possible the three winning apps in each category go forward to form the 2017 MobiTog Recommended Apps list. As an indication of their popularity each app’s percentage of the total vote is shown in brackets after its name.

Thank you for your votes, your support and for once again showing what things a great community like MobiTog is capable of.

    Alternative camera app
In an upset to the status quo, two venerable MobiTog favourites, Hipstamatic and Camera+ have surged back to popularity, while previous alternative camera choice, ProCamera, drops back into third place, sharing it with newcomer Lenka.
16 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    Hipstamatic [20%]
    Camera+ [18%]
    ProCamera and Lenka [8%]

    Photo Editing app
Snapseed shows no sign in slipping out of favour with Mobifolk, in fact it increased its dominance over every other editing app this time. That just left iColorama and Touch Retouch to tie for second slot and Leonardo, a previous winner, hard on their heels.
14 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    Snapseed [35%]
    iColorama and Touch Retouch [12.5%]
    Leonardo [10%]

    Video Camera app
The first of this year’s new categories shows that, while not every member of MobiTog enjoys shooting video, those who do think that their device’s native camera is all they need. However, for those who desire something more advanced, pro-level apps FiLMiC Pro and Vizzywig are highly recommended.
6 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    Native camera [45%]
    FiLMiC Pro [15%]
    Vizzywig [10%]

    Video Editing/Effects app
Video demands its own special set of tools when it comes to editing and Apple’s own iMovie seems to be the editor of choice for Mobifolk. However, GoPro’s innovative Quik and the advanced features of LumaFusion are also recommended for video work.
6 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    iMovie [25%]
    Quik [20%]
    LumaFusion [10%]

    Filter/Effects app
Once again, a hotly contested category saw the top three places separated by only four percentage points. Stackables lost its crown to newcomer BeCasso while VSCO slipped into third place, ousting last year’s favourite Mextures.
22 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    BeCasso [10%]
    Stackables [8%]
    VSCO [6%]

    Mono Effect app
MobiTog continues its love affair with mono photography, always looking for new apps to help create their monochromatic images. Snapseed is the only survivor from last year’s top three and shares first place with Dramatic Black & White, while VSCO and Lenka closely vie for the rest of the field.
13 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
Dramatic Black & White and Snapseed [14%]
    Lenka [10%]
    VSCO [9.5%]

    Text Overlay app
There are many apps that enable mobile photographers to overlay text and designs onto their images, producing innovative results. For the first time these apps are recognised in a category of their own with the all-powerful Snapseed sharing top honours with dedicated text app Phonto. Over and Retype also get high recommendations from Mobimembers.
10 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    Snapseed and Phonto [25%]
    Over [19%]
    Retype [12%]

    Image Transfer app
Although cloud sharing is so prevalent these days, MobiTog still seems to prefer a mixture of apps and cloud-based solutions to move its images around. Voting was very close for all the options chosen.
8 options were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    Dropbox and Flickr [15%]
    Google Photos and AirDrop [12.5%]
    Photo Transfer App [12%]

    Photo Social/Sharing app
Amazingly, all three of last year’s recommended apps return to the 2017 list, with only a slight change of position between Flickr and Instagram.
To possibly no-one’s surprise (that is no one in this community) MobiTog is the recommended social photo app – as it should be and is an automatic given is this poll. After all, where would be without it?
6 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    MobiTog [38%]
    Flickr [36%]
    Instagram [34%]

    Photo Utility app
What would we do without our photo utility apps? These apps tell us everything from what resolution our pictures were shot in, where they were taken, to even what the best time of day to shoot a photo is. In recognition of this they now get their own category in the MRAs with Big Photo muscling into the inaugural top spot, closely followed by exif-reader Metapho. Google Photos comes in third.
11 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    Big Photo [19%]
    Metapho [18.5%]
    Google Photos [7%]

    Personal favourite app
As always, given a free vote on photo apps, MobiTog members have come up with an incredibly diverse list of apps for this category. This year Snapseed rises to top of the pack, fending off a three-way tie for second place with VSCO bringing up the rear.
22 apps were voted for in this category.
MobiTog’s recommended apps for 2017 are:
    Snapseed [20%]
Hipstamatic, iColorama and Superimpose [10% each]
    VSCO [5%]

richardcb - Great job Rich, a brilliant reference tool for new entrants and experienced Mobile Photographers alike... :notworthy:

Just a tad concerned at how close 'others' are to our beloved MobiTog App...

And big THANK YOU to everyone who voted in the MRA 2017 - as always, Rich could not have done it without your valuable input and insight...

Interesting results Richard. I was expecting a total dominance of the list by Apple but probably due to Snapseed and VSCO being cross platform (and Lenka) it seems Android is represented in most categories.

I'm sure you were half joking there Rog, but I do have an observation....
As much as I love MobiTog and I think its the best community based photographic forum I've been a member of, I have found there is a flaw v Instagram / Flickr.
Lets take the colour challenge fer instance. This week its a fishy theme and yes its a 'challenge' and challenges are great, unless you just don't have a fish picture (or whatever is it that week). In which case you are stuck for a week to post a colour image.
Yes you could open a separate thread per image, but personally I wouldn't feel that comfortable with that. Maybe a 'oddments' type thread like Ted and one or two others have could be the answer. Whereas you can post random images to IG on whatever takes your fancy. Not saying its a massive problem and there are a range of themes/threads on MobiTog, but its maybe something to think about? Thankfully the B/W weekly challenge is theme free

John, you can post whatever images you like - wherever you like (within proper standards of decency, of course). That's why the extensive list of 'forums' so you know where to put your image if it's a flower or a street scene. We've had the colour challenge up a relatively short time - since I've been here people have been (and still do) posting colour images outside of the challenges .

I knew someone would take it as a criticism, it wasn't at all, just an observation. I see the most traffic on MobiTog in the challenges and then the 365/52's. The many forums seem to be lagging behind, maybe because people like me forget that they are there !!
It also means making a new thread to that particular forum each time.

I am sure zenjenny Jennifer's comment wasn't a criticism either John, just an observation, much as your comment surely was. I, for one would not take your observation as any kind of criticism, rather quite the opposite, a constructive comment...

We do always need those to help us improve, but your comment is quite vexing in a way we have not come across before, as it does point out a good and valid 'hole' we may have to give a little thought to, perhaps a separate discussion thread to mull it over and not clog Richard's glory thread up with idle chat... :D

Useful and constructive ideas and suggestions, as usual, very welcome... :rog:

I told you, Rog, those old, round one pound coins are no longer acceptable bribery currency. I need shiny, new 12-sided coins to keep MobiTog at the top of the list. :sneaky:

I'm glad you're happy, John. It's either that these apps are cross platform or just down to the extremely good taste of Mobifolk. I prefer the latter. :)

John, I hear you, and think you have a valid point. Perhaps after this *fishy* challenge we can switch to a non-themed MC challenge for awhile and see what people think.

Apologies, Richard (notice I'm walking on teatowels so as not to mess up the floor) for responding to John's observation before I said 'bloody good job, Richard -- thankyou, sir, for another of your very useful, interesting (and no doubt time-consuming) yearly surveys!' :notworthy:  :)
