Once again we need your help to compile a new list of essential photo apps; the kind of apps you wish you’d known about when you were starting out. Over the past three years your choices have been invaluable in producing a list of recommended apps for members new to MobiTog and mobile photography in general.

Last year VividHDR, Snapseed, Hipstamatic, Mextures, Photo Transfer App and Flickr were selected and have been featured in Weekend Bargains ever since. For over a year they have been representative of the best essential apps available – but have newer and better ones superseded them? We need you to help to compile the new 2015 list.

We’re making a few changes this time out. There will only be one round of voting (this one) and the top three apps in each category will make up the new list – so make your votes count. There is also a new category – MobiTog App Hero. This is for any photo app you consider worthy of special recognition. There will be just one winner in this category.

Please vote in the following categories:
    1. Camera replacement apps.
    2. Photo editing apps.
    3. Filter/effects apps.
    4. Mono effect apps.
    5. Image transfer apps (for moving pics between devices and computers).
    6. Photo social/sharing apps.
    7. Personal favourite apps of yours - any genre.

    8. MobiTog App Hero - any photo app, any genre that you consider worthy of recognition over the past year.

    Guidelines
    • You are free to vote for as many apps as you like but we suggest you try and keep it down to around half a dozen, tops.
    • Vote by replying to this thread.
    • Please bear in mind you are choosing apps that you feel will be of use to others. If you have a personal favourite vote for it in category 7.
    • Feel free to suggest alternate categories should you consider any apps or app types not represented. They may not be featured this year but will be considered for future polls.
It’s all down to you, Mobifolk. Please reply to this thread which will remain open for the next two weeks. After that we’ll compile the list of winners and announce them.

Help new and future MobiTog members by coming up with the best photo apps you can. Thank you.

I also have some suggestions for categories.

First 3 that I feel are essential since the area of iPhoneography spans over and sometimes blends several areas of "traditional media". Those areas are - ta-daaaaaa:
    1. Painting Apps
    2. Animation Apps
    3. Vector Apps.
One other idea I had was to have a category for "On Trend Apps". To explain what I mean, an app that's excellent and very much in vogue. Some apps that would have won that category in the past are Tiny Planet, Percolator or Tangle. For some people these apps continued to be a favourite app (or part of their toolbox), but for a while EVERYONE was smitten.

Thanks for the suggestions marmalademoon and Michal Sz.

I'm a bit loathe to add too many specific categories for fear of splintering the vote. I added Chris the Blue's mono suggestion mainly because it is an area of activity enjoyed by many Mobitoggers and thus a logical choice. Painting, animation, vector (huh?) and even HDR are more niche interests. I had hoped that category 3, Filter/effects apps, would cover most of these and a few more.

As for 'On Trend Apps', I think this would be a difficult category to add because, by definition, trends tend to come and go fairly quickly. Essential Apps is designed to run for a full year and feature apps that have a solid track record and can be recommended to all our members. A 'trendy' app that may be popular at the beginning of the year but could have slid into obscurity by year's end. However, my mind is never fully made up until the last vote is counted so please feel free to argue your cases further.

I appreciate all of your inputs. This is what MobiTog is all about; enthusiastic and knowledgeable photographers championing their favourite apps. This helps everybody by showing what's out there and worthy of note. Keep 'em coming. :)

I understand about not wanting to add too many categories, richardcb .

Mono makes a lot of sense so I'm glad you added that one.

I suppose trends are hard to spot until afterwards, when you know they were more of a flash in the pan.

However, I would argue that painting apps (such as Procreate, ArtRage, Paper, Auryn, Inspire Pro, Zen Brush, Ink Artist, Tayasui Sketches) do form a logical category. Actually animation does too. But I think there are more MobiTogers who use painting apps than animation apps. The point being though, that these aren't filter apps, like the ones that let you apply painterly effects (for example Aquarella, Brushstroke, Glaze or Repix). So one way of looking at it, is that these are more like the Camera App category? I mean the app you use to create the image to begin with? And then you can continue working on the image in other apps, applying effects, filters, adding layers or making collages?

I just wanted to explain my thinking, and I fully understand if you think a Painting App category wouldn't fit in just now. I can see how you don't want to end up with too many categories, and it's possible that painting apps aren't used so much by the MobiTog community.

    Thanks for listening! :)

    2. Photo editing apps.

    Snapseed

    3. Filter/effects apps.

Stackables. (Not really a filters app but a textures app. Putting here since there isn't a texture category)
Icolorama.. if you haven't checked out some of the additions to icolorama lately, you need to.

    4. Mono effect apps.

    Provoke

    5. Image transfer apps (for moving pics between devices and computers).

    Transfer app

    6. Photo social/sharing apps.

    Here :)
Facebook, only because it is the only one I'm actively using.
None of them really shine for me this year. Social networking seems to have hit a very rough low point. I'm hoping something changes.

    7. Personal favourite apps of yours - any genre.

Inspire pro- art app. (I'm for adding a painting app category as I use all of them more than most regular/filter apps)
    Phonto- text/font app

    8. MobiTog App Hero - any photo app, any genre that you consider worthy of recognition over the past year
    Inspire pro- art app
    Procreate- art app
    Stackables- texture app
Pixelmator- art app (I classify it as a painting app but it is more than that)
These are apps I use a lot outside of straight camera shooters.

This is what I have right now, I might come back later to add/change my vote.

    My extra categories

HDR (95% of my shooting is now HDR. I hardly every use non-HDR camera apps anymore)

    Time-Lapse

    Video (FiLMiC Pro)

For Fun (for things like Action Movie, Slit-Scan, CatPaint)

Image creation apps not camera-based - painting/drawing (like ArtStudio, MyBrushes, PhotoViva)

Image Creation apps not camera based - Image generators (like Frax, Meander Plus, Flame Painter)

360 Panorama apps (DMD Panorama, Sphere)

Special Purpose apps (like RollWorld, HyperDroste)

Useful information/accessory apps (ExifWizPro, iWatermark+, Photogene)

Square-only apps - since so few regular photos benefit from being cropped into a square these aspect-limited apps should be a group unto themselves. :-p

What I want to see in the coming year (Focus Stacking, more apps making use of Motrr Galileo (like Sphere, FaceSnap, TimeLapse, DMD Panorama))
