    Saturday, 2pm, TimeStamp, no theme.

    Overview:

Participants are invited to make pictures for the TimeStamp project. There is no theme this round. Photograph whatever is happening, or make something happen. However, the catch is that your picture(s) must be made at 2:00pm, your local time, on Saturday afternoon. Post your pictures (up to 3) on this thread. Sit back and await fame and recognition, and maybe a spiffy new virtual award.

If you're new to the TimeStamp idea here's the overview: here at MobiTog we have participants all over the world, in many different time zones. What if everyone made a picture at 2pm on Saturday, of whatever is going on, wherever they happen to be, and share that picture on TimeStamp. We should end up with a global snapshot of what is going on everywhere at 2 pm. This could be ordinary, humorous, puzzling, but it is bound to be interesting. The TimeStamp title comes from the metadata that is added to every new photo at the time it is shot, the creation date and time.

Rules: Please see the Rules and Guidelines for MobiChallenges posted HERE

    • Standard Mobitog image rules apply. Images must be captured/created & edited entirely on a mobile device such as a mobile phone or tablet.

    • All images must be photographed and edited between 2:00pm to 2:20pm, local time. Any editing must be done within that time frame. In other words, don't rely on extensive image manipulation or compositing. These things are allowed, but must be accomplished within the 20 minute window of opportunity. Better to concentrate on capturing a unique moment at 2pm.

Secret tip: This isn't strictly a photo contest. Good reportage or storytelling can get you lots of bonus points. Helping other people discover some place near you is another way to get bonus points. Make a connection.

    • In addition to the regular (up to) 3 images, you are now allowed to post one additional image, if you want to, to help "set the scene". This image should be described as "to set the scene" or "setting the scene", or "the location" or something similar, to clearly identify it because it won't be counted as part of your submission of 3 photos.

    • You are free to photograph something actually happening, or nothing happening, or make something happen, or to create your own image from scratch, as long as it and any added parts or layers are photographed within the 2:00 to 2:20pm window of opportunity.

Post your images to this thread.

Closing date: entries must be posted no later than 2pm the following day (Sunday). You can post your images right away after making them but if you happen to be in a situation where this is not possible, you have 24 hours.

    • Have some creative fun!

Any questions? Let's try to get them sorted out before the big day.

    • There will be an overview after each event to discuss any observations of things of special interest.

    • AWARDS! There will be some new virtual awards spontaneously made up as the occasions arise. The award winner will gain the privilege of wearing (flaunting), for one week, the virtual hat/cape/glasses/etc. associated with that award. Topics might be photojournalism, humour, documentary, brilliant observation, street photography, decisive moment, that was unexpected!, quick thinking under duress, inspired making of instant art, doing the best you can in a boring situation, etc. I will present the awards but participants may nominate other participants for awards of merit and even invent new awards as they see fit.

    • Imagine being able to wear the Glowing Crown of Omnipotence for a whole week, where your every opinion expressed must accepted and acknowledged as undeniable truth.

Tips on setting alarms: you can use the Calendar app to set 2 alerts. I like to set the first alert 1 hour ahead in case I have completely forgotten (where's my phone!)(my battery is dead). The second alert I set 15 minutes ahead so I can get ready. You can create a second event at the same time for more alerts! Maybe set your alarm clock to go off right at 2pm to make you jump. Set another alarm to let you know when your time is up.

If you would like to join in the fun, just post a message below saying "I'm in!"

It turns out that April 22 is Earth Day, in case you need any thematic inspiration.

I heard on the radio today in the car that Earth Day is the start of soil conservation week. One of the events planned is called "soil your undies". It's a demonstration project to help people discover the quality of the soil where they live. You are supposed to volunteer a pair of your underwear, plain cotton and not dyed, then you dig a hole in the soil and bury them. Then you wait, for about 2 or 3 months. Then you dig them up and see what's left of them. In good soil with a full compliment of soil organisms the only thing left of your underwear should be the elastic waistband. If you dig up your underwear and find it less consumed that gives you an indication of poor soil condition and maybe you might decide to add some nourishment to the soil.

This idea was thought up because Soil Conservation Week was pretty much a non-event for most people and it gives people a way to learn something about what is going on in their own soil. People who work the land, of course, are much more conscious of losing precious soil through erosion, etc. and they don't need a special week to think about it.

It was more planned to take my time out today at the museum of caricature. But it happened to turn out my parents needed some time with me as mom wanted to shop for some clothes and asked me to join them. So we went and she really found something nice. Then we went to the garden centre to get the soil for my plants and after that dad decided he's hungry and we should got out to do so. So I came back home something after 1pm and stored my new treasures on the balcony. When the alarm reminded me I was just watering my tiny plants. And here are the pictures: (all Hipsta combined in Photostein; from left to right top and again bottom row)
    1. Tiny Tomato plants, just watered, tallest meanwhile approx 8 cm high; 2. (Macro attached) very tiny strawberries the bigger leaf approx 2 mm diameter now; 3. The lavender I couldn't resist at the garden centre. They don't bloom yet, but the lovely scent was so wonderful already that I've got one; 4. The turquoise flower box with holders (on the still dirty balcony - I have two of those boxes, not balconies, but I wish! ) that will contain the strawberries in the near future; 5. My two frog plant ties that will go somewhere on the tomatoes when they are tall enough ( too cute to resist); and 6. In the background you see the soil for vegetables, the lavender again and in the foreground the idea of the time when we'll meet in London (and a couple more days): the green tip can be screwed to a bottle and stuck upside down into the soil in the pot. So the plants get watered for a (hopefully) longer time and don't dry out when I'm away. Only downside: they don't fit to the average plastic bottle. but as you see on the picture the bottle fits when I keep the cap on. So either I'll find fitting bottles or stick those on and just drill a hole into the cap.
Doesn't it fit to Earth Day?! didn't know it's today until I read Brian's post.

Happy Time Stamp Earth Day everybody!!!

And taken out of time, St John's College Cambridge. It was a glorious day in Cambridge. Lots of tourists out today, soaking up the history. And checking their phones for who-knows-what.

Prowling about the yard looking for Earth Day inspiration. The most obvious thing as I look around is mole excavations.
    HipstamaticPhoto-514575180.790677.jpg
After the snow has melted I am confronted with several areas where soil has been dug out of the ground where moles made their tunnels.
    HipstamaticPhoto-514575222.308563.jpg
Several of these diggings are bigger than 1 metre square. Often one area joins the next and it covers a big area. Looking down the mole holes you often see water running under the surface of the ground. The moles do this deliberately to soften the ground for easier digging and to make it easier to find worms, etc., to eat. The tunnels are about 4.5cm diameter so this tells you the mole is bigger than your typical mouse. Later the areas where the tunnels are will sink and I will have to go around fixing all the low spots. Moles are such fun, not. The Star-nosed mole is the culprit here. I have hardly ever seen one since they are active after dark and under ground.

My house is built on a south facing slope. A slope that has water always coming down hill from springs, except last year when the water dried up. I have 3 ditches dug, mostly by hand, to direct the water away from the house.
    HipstamaticPhoto-514575384.330285.jpg
These ditches are always gradually filling in with dirt, mud, & gravel washed down from uphill. Yes, erosion. Every year I have to inspect the ditches and dig out any parts filling in. I can move this eroded soil to other places in the yard, such as where the moles have made holes.
This eroded soil is very much what day soil conservation awareness is all about.
    IMG_3413.JPG
Here's a hole I dug just before 2 pm. Some years it would have filled up with water after 5 or 10 minutes. Not this year. At the depth of the shovel I hit clay. The water tends to sit on top of the clay and percolate horizontally through the soil rather than sinking in deeper. Any gardening needs to be done in raised beds.

Today I made my pictures with Hipstamatic and they were all horrible. No, make that hideous. The combos all looked interesting when I selected them but completely failed to show soil and dead grass so you could tell what they were. I reverted them all to one of my own combos made earlier. I'm sure glad I saved the originals.

Well, this morning I was doing something way more interesting than at 2pm. I participated in a Spring Cleanup for Earth Day at the lake down the street from me. It was my first time and a lot of fun. Of course I was not satisfied with trolling the upper edges of the park/lake, picking up the tiny bits & pieces of junk laying around (and all the cigarette butts ), so I fought through the sticker-y brambles and made my way down the not-too-steep banks of the lake, to the edges where there was a treasure trove of crap (bottles, dog toys, styrofoam and cans). I found a long hooked dead branch and was able to retrieve a good amount of stuff (kind of like the thing they use at the dice tables in casinos ) I had one mishap when my right foot pushed through the leaves and mulch into thick mud, but that's okay... just collateral damage. All the bending and stooping, reaching and crawling through thorny branches gave me a bit of a workout in areas not normally used, so after coming home and washing all my muddy clothes and eating some lunch, I decided to take a hot bath + Epsom salts & Rosemary essential oil. (......ahhhhhh.....)
