Incredibly beautiful images, Ann, but I'm so happy you and your husband are okay!! Sounds frightening, and I feel for the poor tour guide too. Sending you hugs.

It was fully booked I'm afraid. I was deeply disappointed at first but I'm quite philosophical about life and I am sure we will get another chance. Maybe over the Grand Canyon or something like that.

Wow, I was surprised at how many tourists there are at Lake Inle! Tourism has obviously escalated hugely over the passed two years. We are enjoying a rest this morning before flying back to Yangon this afternoon. I have to say that the tour group I choose was not the best. The itinerary we were handed on arrival was the original quote which had changed quite a lot and it caused all sorts of confusion and was why I never picked up on the ballooning. Lesson: always go for the top companies on Tripadvisor!

In Hanoi and sent my friends of to explore this afternoon while I had a break as this is my third visit to the city. Time to catch up even if a little!

Back to Myanmar. After our great escape a lazy day with a little golf for Tom and me riding along in the buggy.

Lake Inle now. Myanmar clearly becoming like the rest of Asia with all the tourists. All the boats and pollution caused by the engines must be affecting the fisherman. We had a very shy and 'earthy' but very good English speaking lady as our guide who preferred to live in the mountains and I got the feeling she was disturbed by the mass of people descending on her area. I told her to expect worse.

You've done a great job at digging out the details of this story and your photos help to happen it home. A sad story, though.

Back in Yangon, we walked around the streets trying to get a glimpse of daily life. I was testing out the new Venice pak but ended up changing many of the photos to something I thought better.

We arrived back early into Hong Kong and three hours later my childhood friend arrive with her husband and youngest son (20). Managed to get some of my washing done and then it's out on the tour trail again.

I took them to Hong Kong Park to the Chinese Tea House where we sampled 3 different teas and tasted traditional Chinese desserts. Here are the cakes of tea that you can buy although you have to wash tea that comes in this form and this is all part of the traditional Chinese tea ceremony. On certain days you can observe the whole process which you read about in such books as Memoirs of a Geisha. However, we just sampled tea which does not require this process.

Caught a lucky break! I took my guests to Causeway Bay and the traditional Chinese Dragon dance, often performed over CNY was about to take place so we got a prime position and enjoyed a wonderful performance. I was concentrating on getting some good video so I didn't get any really good photos. I hope to put up a video sometime showing parts of the ceremony which I suppose it really is.

I took the troops on a trip to see the stilted village, the big Buddha and to finally take the long cable car back from Lantau Island - a highlight. Fortunately, Tom texted me while we were at the stilted village to inform me that he had discovered the cable car was closed for maintenance for a couple of weeks! The cable car is a quick way home and I dreaded having to retrace our steps but after a bit of googling I discovered that a small ferry from the stilted village would take us to the end of the cable car. So we decided to skip the Buddha and take the little ferry at 2pm as it only goes 3 times a day!

We all left today to start our tour of Vietnam with a brief stopover in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to see the Killing Fields. Tom joined us for this weekend which was a sort of Vietnam war/Killing Fields experience.

Our first stop was Ho Chi Minh previously known as Saigon where we went to the Chi Chi tunnels made by the Vietcong which helped them to wear down and defeat the US troops. The booby traps set by the Vietcong were awful and it must have been just dreadful being a US soldier there. Because of these traps, the US troops didn't venture out at night so this is when the Vietcong tended their paddy fields in the dark.

I was surprised looking back that I only took a handful of photos this day so here's my nearest and dearest trying to get back out of a Vietcong tunnel. Unfortunately the one of me is taken on Tom's DSLR. I managed to close the lid while in the hole because I'm just a shorty but Tom was too tall.

An early morning flight to Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

The Killing Fields: a sobering day.

It's a long and involved story of how Pol Pot came to power and how between 2-3 million people were either murdered or starved to death out of a population of 8 million. How can such a thing happen without most of the population realising, you ask? Pol Pot was inspired by Stalin's and Mao's communism and wanted to return Cambodia to an agricultural community. He realised that educated people would be a threat to him and his plan so he enlisted and brainwashed young uneducated boys and girls aged around 14-19 from peasant families who were led to believe that the people being killed were enemies of the state. His followers became known as the Khmer Rouge. He displaced masses of people around the country, dividing families so that nobody knew where their families had gone or whether they were still alive. His victims were tortured and children and babies were given the same fate as their parents to prevent revenge in the future. Any members of the Khmer Rouge who did not support this policy would suffer the same fate. It became a matter of 'kill or be killed'.

The memorial at Choeung Ek which is the site set aside as a testament to the atrocities that took place throughout the country and which serves as a memorial and also a place where people can pay their respects. The memorial itself houses many of the skulls and bones found at this site.

We are on our way to Halong Bay and our cruise. It's a 3.5 hour bus journey and we stop on the way for lunch near the rice paddy fields and to be entertained with a water puppet show which is a traditional Vietnamese show.
