On a much lighter note, the apartments in HK put in a lot of effort to decorate the foyer for both Christmas and Chinese New Year. Tom and I have a good chuckle when we see this little decoration. During Christmas it has a Santa Claus. Now it has a laughing Buddha. And I just had to add the gif. It's a classic.

Need some exercise this afternoon after a day indoors so trotted down to my local mall. More of the beautiful paper birds like the one I posted on the 13 Jan which are part of the CNY display.

Now for the 385 steps home. Why do I do it!!?

Oh my goodness Ann. I had no idea. I can't believe that this happens. And nobody ever reports it in a newspaper article or anything. Shocking. I'm grateful to you for taking these and adding to my education.

Actually Tom and I were interviewed by a BBC reporter this time last year about what we thought of conditions for Filipinos when we were out on a Sunday but it was for radio not TV. I think it is so commonplace to see them on the streets on Sunday, people don't even 'see' them. It's not news.

But the court case of the killing of two Filipinos by the stockbroker last year was big news around the world. I think that gave their conditions a bit of coverage.

To me a while to read it all. Gosh, what pity, I'm happy for those who won the court and hope there will even more coming up to turn this slavery into work. Crossing fingers they'll change the rules.

Yes, like Christmas but the decorations definitely don't feel so extravagant this year. But then I thought Christmas was more low key this year too. Perhaps shops tightening their belts this year. I haven't been to the Landmark yet which has the best decorations of all. Perhaps tomorrow.

Yet more paper birds at a completely different place - a shop. Not quite so pretty as my mall though. Edited in Snapseed.

Beautiful. :inlove: What do they do with all of these decorations once the New Year has started?

Well, I suppose the paper stuff like this just gets dumped. Last year all the apartments had similar stuff for Christmas like Nutcrackers so I wonder if some places don't hire decorations. Malls I think get the shops to contribute to getting an installation which I presume costs a fortune. For Chinese New Year, the apartment blocks tend to pull out the same stuff with an extra piece here and there like a stuffed hen. When I went to take photos in the foyer the other day, the doorman (we have great staff here and the night shift staff are particularly helpful and smiley) insisted that I take a selfie with the hen lol. As I was in my smartest home grunge outfit, I have disguised it in BeCasso to protect the innocent

    Cheesy grin or what.

Met some friends for coffee and this lovely simple decoration was on the table. Later I realised I hadn't taken any other photos of worth.

Lovely Ann. I haven't got to grips with Portrait Mode for flowers - I always end up with bits of them out of focus.

Yes, I agree. I'm not sure why sometimes it works and sometimes not. I think when it's a large bunch of small flowers it doesn't seem to work well.

All of a sudden all the lights have been switched on around the city and CNY really seems to be in full swing so I am thinking that the tradition may well be that this gets done exactly a week before the 1st day of Chinese New Year. The whole celebration of CNY (this year starting on the 28th Jan) really spans 15 days, the first two days being public holidays. Different traditions are followed on each of the 15 days although many of them have fallen away during modern times.

Take with iPhone 7 native camera, no edits.
