Welcome to MobiTog's App Showdown, where we will test and compare apps with similar functions, for example, Dramatic B&W vs. Noir. Here's how it works…
    • Each App Showdown will feature two (2) apps and one (1) nekkid image.
    • MobiTog members will edit the nekkid image TWICE, using one of the featured apps per photo (you will end up with two completed edits). Post both your photos in the challenge thread, along with comments on your experience with the apps.
    • To determine the winning app, MobiTog members will vote using a Voting Poll in the challenge thread.
    • The person whose photo receives the most *likes* will get to choose the next two Showdown apps AND upload a new nekkid image. In the event of a tie, one winner will choose the new Showdown apps and the other winner will post the new nekkid image.
Please see the Rules and Guidelines for MobiChallenges posted -------> HERE

Thank you Cat for waking me up here. I'm choosing two similar multi processing apps that I use, but I need to make a choice which one is a keeper in case I need to conserve space.
PicsPlay Pro vs. Pixir Express +.

No time to process now, but I will soon.

I didn't know it was that much! I have it for quite some time so I don't remember what I paid for it. I think there is a free or lite version before you commit to the pro version. Check it out

About once a month it comes on sale for $0.99, only for a couple days. Pics Play Photo Editor is the free version
If you don't have AppZapp Pro which comes on sale all the time or get their free version, both will let you follow apps and you can have it notify you by email when a followed app changes price.

Hands down PicsPlay Pro by Jellybus

First off comparing a free app v a $3.99 app may be unfair but that aside I just like how PicsPlay Pro works.

    Pixlr Express Plus
Cropping was a couple steps but easy enough to do. I decided to just try a straight 16:9 crop which I quite like for this photo.
Filters, there is not as many to choose from and effects seem to be closer together (not as much change between them), but at least you can set the opacity which helps.
Borders, good selection but for some reason they were not working, I tried rebooting, making sure other apps were off and still no, deleted and re downloaded and still did not work so I gave up on it.
There is vignetting but not as many variations as the other app.
It does have undo but the next edit resets it so you can only go back one step.
Biggest drawback though is there is no compare to the original so you resort to turning opacity all the way down and then readjust.

    image.jpg
Cropped to 16:9, Effect Subtle Ingrid, Color Correct Red.

    PicsPlay Pro
    Cropping is simple and easy.
Filters, there is a huge selection and some are quite nice right out of the box. Again they have the ability to adjust the opacity of any filter. If you stack filters it keeps track of them and you can go back to any point and start from that point again. You can't go back and edit that single filter and retain any after that.
Borders, may not have as many as Pixlr but they worked and a nice selection
Vignetting, there is a large selection of both colours and shapes ie oval, rectangular, corners etc.
This app does have a compare button so you can see how it has changed quickly and easily without having to readjust.

All I can find in the UK store is Pixplay filters, but yesterday I couldn't find any jixipix apps at first.

Really struggling with these two apps - guess my style doesn't suit what they do!
    Pics Play Pro
    ImageUploadedByMobiTog1376988507.271232.jpg
    Used Portrait, Vertigo, Old Paper

    Pixlr Express Plus
    ImageUploadedByMobiTog1376988539.663425.jpg
Used one of the Too Old effects, then added a Grunge Overlay and a Paper one

Out of the two I vote for Pixlr Express Plus

I wanted to get an idea of workflow so I decided to try and tilt shift both apps to see what worked better for me. ImageUploadedByMobiTog1377039068.006594.jpg
First is pics play pro with tilt shift.
    ImageUploadedByMobiTog1377039156.201974.jpg
Next is Pixir express plus with focal blur.
I liked pressing the adjustment button and getting 15 different adjustments with submenus as well. I also like the texture overlays that can be rotated an flipped, the filters were more defined then pics play although pics play was categorized better with swiping from one to the next. The truth is for me it's almost a toss up with Pixir getting a narrow edge.

    An Android sneak attack ...

RoseCat graciously allowed some competition from the Android versions of these apps. Although I use both iproducts and android devices, my medium of choice right now is the Galaxy Note II from Samsung. The Google Play store struggles to keep up with iTunes in terms of acceptable camera and editing apps. However, both these apps are available in comparable versions. So just for fun ...

My first photo is from PicsPlay and uses Foliage, Vintage OneDay, Beauty Mary Jane FX filters as well as an increase to the brightness and contrast of the photo and vertical right blur.

    PicsPlay_1377050099231 139K 2.JPG

The second photos is from Pixlr Express and incorporated the AutoFix Adjustment, a 40% Vibrant adjustment, a 40% sharpen adjustment, the Sara filter, 70% of the Bogdan overlay and has a Wthin faded (50%) border.

    Pixlr Express 3 594 K.JPG

It may have been the Android versions that I was using but my original image started at 252K and all my attempts using PicsPlay were reduced from that. The image I used here was 139K. On the other hand, all the Pixlr Express images were higher than 252K. The final version I have uploaded was 594K.

I am a Pixlr Express fan so perhaps my editing was jaded. But I feel that the Android version of Pixlr Express offers so much more than the PicsPlay app.

Thanks for letting me share my Android images. :)

    My turn ...

I'm sorry but I did not keep track of the settings and adjustments I used. What I did do was give myself a time limit per app. The time limit I used was FIVE minutes. Just to see which was easier to navigate and easier to use.

    First PicsPlayPro:
    image.jpg

    Second PixlrExpressPlus:
    image.jpg

    My verdict:
For me the result seems to be more cut and dried than what everyone else experienced. There can be only one winner and that is PixlrExpressPlus!!! The controls were logically layed out and ordered, with adjustable settings for everything and then some. It is an amazing application and a worthy addition to any iPhoneographers toolbox. Everything worked, including the frames (don't know what happened for you Larry). And even better ... It is lightning fast and responsive ... even on my iPhone3GS!

If I had payed full price for PicsPlayPro I would have been really disappointed. I picked it up on a freebie ... but fr now I will be deleting it.

PixlrExpressPlus on the other will be elevated to a higher collection of apps.

I would find it difficult to pick between the two. Both have their nice features, and both have their drawbacks.

PicsPlay has a lighting brush, which I found to be so subtle as to be useless. But I was able to approximate its use by using the Darken filter and masking it out where I wanted light to appear. My masking was a little off, leaving a dark edge on the hills.
    ImageUploadedByMobiTog1377227075.976418.jpg

PixlrExpress+ I had an easier time with, because I've done a tutorial on it. I did an overlay, then a tilt-shift I adjusted to apply only at the bottom, and then added a border.
    ImageUploadedByMobiTog1377227228.178165.jpg

PixlrExpress+ has a history brush. Like PicsPlay, that allows you to mask out the most recent filter added. If you wish to make multiple changes to the same area, then you have to re-paint the mask in both apps.

I would probably give an edge to PixlrExpress+ for the Creative Effects, which are fun, quick graphic rearrangements. But it's not a great advantage.
