So Apple didn't announce an iPhone 5 but they have beefed up the iPhone 4 with an A5 processor and a whole host of new goodies and called it the iPhone 4S. Best news for iphoneographers are the following features:
    • New 5-element, f2.4, 8 megapixel camera
    • Face recognition
    • 3264x2448 images
    • 60% more pixels
    • 30% sharper
    • 1080p HD video with stabilization and noise reduction
There will be a 64Gb version of the iPhone 4S for the first time. It will go on sale in the UK on October 14th (US price $399), pre-orders from October 7th.

iOS5 will be available for download from October 12th.

So, are we excited or underwhelmed?

Ah right, £499 is handset only - I've still got 1.5 years left on my contract so looks like I'm going to have to dig deep - hmm very tempting...

I was waiting for a bigger display, damn!! BTW the new camera, the processor A5 and 64GB worth the upgrade. The new Siri vocal assistant is amazing too.

All i can say is 'so what'. It's just apples clever marketing tool that makes you want to spend more money on something that's just got a few extras. Iphone 4 is pretty fast anyway. Photos are pretty good. Personaly, if i want to take "better " photos then i use my canon d60 which i also use for full Hd film. The iphone is great for photos, don't get me wrong and there are some brill photos on this site but in the end of the day, if you want to take photos and filming more seriously, then you wouldn't use the iphone. Apple are very clever in making you think you need to constant upgrade your phone....look at the ipad as an example.

Personal opinion here only but I ditched my main camera (cheap and nasty but it took good enough photos) for a camera that I carry with me wherever I go, I never EVER leave this camera at home so if I need a camera - got my iPhone. Would I use it if I was a professional photographer, depends - most likely not, especially for weddings or shots that I feel deserve the level of detail that only a DSLR or similar could provide. I know of, and have heard if a great many number, people that are professionals giving up their DSLR and using their iPhone' professionally - if you're a skilled photographer then it's not about the equipment, it's about the shot.

So, I completely disagree with you on this one Shep - this is a serious step up from Apple and one that will, I'm sure, be much appreciated by the iPhoneography community at the very least.

Hi, i didn't say it wasn't a bad camera and i agree, it's all about the shot but i'm sorry, you can't get the same detail or depth of focus with the iphone. I also mention film making which more and more film makers are using for the quality and used with the right lenses, can get amazing depth of field. I will still use my iphone for
Off the cuff photos and video but there really isn't any comparison. What i do like is more and more people are getting creative with photography and has seen some wonderful photos on here and else where.

Definitely agree, there's something about a shot taken on a really good DSLR that you would never, ever get with an iPhone but you pay much, much more and the camera is big and bulky, not ideal for holidays or carrying with you everywhere all the time. My point is simply that with the iPhone it's there when you need it and gives you the opportunity to take shots you couldn't before and now, with the 4S they're even better :) I'm not a videographer so I'm not in a position to comment about that side of things.

Agree with you about the creativity side of things - even in myself I notice that I am getting more and more creative in my photography and editing - and there are some inspirational people both here on Mobitog and elsewhere that you can learn so much from. It's also helped me find and feel like part of a community which, living in London, is hard to find.

Damn, Apple should really be paying me to push the 4S - I'm not even 100% sure I'm buying one yet lol

I have iPhone 4. It's good enough to last me until iPhone 5 comes out. I predict 5 will tout an even better camera in the 10 to 12 megapixel range and will probably be the last camera I ever buy.

Interesting thought, Sid. I would definitely say a 12 megapixel camera would be a game changer!
